We thoroughly enjoy hiking in Western Austria (anywhere west of Salzburg). Our typical visits include a four or five star hotel tucked at the end of a valley or up a mountainside.

Our typical day is five or six hours of hiking, a massage, some swimming, and a great meal. Places we've enjoyed the most are the Elisabeth Hotel in Mayrhofen, the Post Hotel in Achenkirch, Hotel Berghof in Lech and other fine hotels in Brand, Bartolomaeberg and Hirschegg.

Does anyone know of other places in western Austria where there is superb hiking and a great hotel to recuperate in?

    Thanks.

I don't do hotels when I go to Austria, only the friendly pensions; but the food and hiking are the main attraction. The area that I love is Kitzbuhel - definitely western Austria (the Tirol) and the hiking is wonderful. See my review of the local inns for some of the choicest spots http://extravigator.com/discussion/55/the-best-inns-around-kitzbuhel/#Item_2 Of course there are plenty of good hotels in the area as well. One that always attracts me, although I only eat there, is the Stanglewirt http://www.stanglwirt.com/en/ a very sophisticated bio-hotel tucked under the mighty Wilder Kaiser.

I've heard good things about the Gannerhof Inn in Innervillgraten, East Tirol. They are known for their gourmet restaurant which is renowned for its locally procured food.
