A friend planning a honeymoon to Italy asked about sandy beaches on the Amalfi Coast or Capri. Can anyone recommend a hotel near a sandy beach, if such a thing exists??

I know of a great sandy beach in Vietri Sul Mare, on the Amalfi Coast. They have a number of beach clubs that line the shore that will be happy to give you a guest membership for the day.
Vietri Sul Mare is a small town that produces earthenware and pottery, so it makes a very nice day trip. The sand is actually quite rough, which you can even see from the photo below. You'll actually find smooth pieces of Italian tile scattered throughout the sand. I wouldn't recommend staying in Vietri Sul Mare because the hotels are not that great.

I'm not aware of a hotel on Capri or the Amalfi Coast that's worthy of a recommendation that also happens to have a sandy beach on the premises.
Both the San Pietro and the Hotel Santa Caterina each have "beach platforms." The San Pietro actually has an elevator that brings you down through the cliff to the beach level. That might be adequate.
