Am planning a road trip through New England, specifically Rhode Island and Maine for late summer. Have never been and have a very flexible itinerary at this point.
Does anyone have any recommendations for great B&Bs or inns? Restaurants? Must see attractions or stops along the way? -

If you can get a reservation, I recommend staying at the Chanler Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island. In my opinion it's one of the best places to stay along the coast between New York and Boston. Absolutely a lovely hotel. But be sure to read my earlier review on the Chanler Hotel before you go!
While in Newport, I also recommend Puerini's for a beautiful and relaxed Italian dinner.

In Maine, of course you'll want to try to stay at the White Barn Inn, in Kennebunkport.
But, one of the highlights of your trip should be to dine at one of the many fine restaurants in Portland. But, as for hotels in the Portland area, I recommend driving 20-minutes up the coast to Freeport and staying at the Harraseeket Inn, which also happens to be a terrific place to eat while in Freeport.

One of the most critically acclaimed restaurants in Maine is Arrows Restaurant in Ogunquit.
Just this past March, head chefs Clark Frasier and Mark Gaier were both nominated by the James Beard Foundation as Best Chefs of the Northeast. And Gourmet magazine ranked it #14 in their list of the 50 best restaurants in the United States.
We had the opportunity to dine there earlier in the summer and it was exquisite. The first thing you'll notice is that they have enormous herb and vegetable garden. Arrive a little early to take a walk through the garden if you can. It's impressive. I can't recommend it enough if you're in the mood for a truly memorable experience. Needless to say, you've probably never tasted ingredients this fresh anywhere else.
Here are some of our photos from the restaurant. My appetizer was a proscuitto and mellon, and my entrée was a duck prepared 4 different ways. The small soup in the upper-left corner of the photo was two of the ways — a duck egg in a dark and flavorful duck broth.
