My friend just informed me they are getting married and invited me to his wedding in Egypt next month. I've never been so could I do this wedding in Cairo, (plus tour Cairo for a day or two)--make it down to Luxor, and then a day trip to Alexandria or Sharm El Sheik in a week? Or am I being too ambitious? I wouldn't ever go to Egypt for a week except this wedding popped up and I don't have much more time than that. But while I am there, I would like to make the most of my trip. Please let me know if you have been to these spots, how you travelled from one place to another and how long it took. And anything else. Thanks very much!

You can absolutely fit it in. We did. Just don't take the lazy Nile cruise option. Look at a map of Egypt while you read my proposed itinerary. It might take just a tad over a week, so you can "cut and paste" as you see fit....

I suggest timing your trip so that you first go to the Sinai to trek the desert with the Bedouin and visit the beautiful and ancient St. Catherine Monastery. See the Burning Bush and Mount Sinai itself. Then, on to Cairo, passing the Suez Canal.

You can "do" Cairo in one day, if you must. Don't miss the Khan El-Khalili Bazaar, the Egyptian Museum, and catch a belly-dancing show (Cairo is the spiritual "source" of belly-dancing). And of course, see the "crown jewels" of Egypt, the Pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx. Stay at Mena House Oberoi (old section).

Alexandria (close to Cairo) will take another day. Don't miss the great seafood and the new Library.

Luxor is next. Amazing, better than the pyramids. Two days is enough. Stay at Winter Palace.

If you have an extra day, go visit Aswan. Not for the Dam (15 minutes stop is all we needed for a photo), but for the Nubian towns along the lush Nile in that area, with its distinctive culture, people and food.

Then, finish your tour by going to Abu Simbel, near the Sudanese border. See the Twins Temples.

Have fun, enshalla. Don't forget to find out the meaning of the word "baksheesh" when you go. It will help.

    Thanks from: Nanoose

JL's advice is good but sounds exhausting. Don't discount the Nile cruise option - it might be 'lazy' but it is a fantastic way to see all the key sites. However, I would avoid the big cruisers and consider instead a cruise on a Dahabiyya - small wooden cruise ships carrying a max of 12 passengers in considerable style.
