In recent months, with the dollar being so weak, the economic downturn and the cost fuel being so high, I've found myself rethinking the practicality of some of my vacations this year. Normally I would find ways to save throughout the year so that I could splurge while on vacation. But this year I'm probably only going to be looking at vacationing domestically.

I know that there was a recent thread on travel suggestions for a weak dollar, but I'm wondering if anyone here has actually had to rethink their plans for their vacations. I know I have!

    Anyone else??

just not willing to, dbw. i'll rethink other 'luxury' items, but not my yearly splurge....

I agree with loml95. I'll do little things throughout the year to save money so that I can splurge on a great vacation. Eating out less, even buying generic brand foods on occasion and driving less when I can. Cutting back in a lot of little ways really adds up.

My splurge is worth saving for, and I value it tremendously. But, the economy does have an effect on my yearly vacation. Some destinations are just not as appealing when the cost is twice as much as it was a few years ago when you add up the airfare, food and hotel. I think it's impossible for those factors not to have some effect on one's travels. It's making the decision on where to go a little more challenging. But, my criteria hasn't changed. I still want to travel somewhere I haven't been and I want the experience to be luxurious and memorable!

The economy hasn't affected my vacations all that much...at least not yet. I usually plan trips up to a year in advance. The destinations are set and often much of the costs and airfare have already been paid months in advance. As for 2009, I'll probably wait a bit before I decide on where to go next!

You wouldn't be the only one who's rethinking their travel plans this year.

I wait for a good deal to come my way. They always do. I've never really planned a trip. A friend is going to Bangkok so I go there, or someone else asked me to go down to SA. Or someone is getting married and I have to go to a wedding overseas...this year, I've been busy with my life and career so a few things have come my way, but I haven't gone, but the economy had nothing to do with it. If all else fails, a carribean jaunt around christmas

What stage in your life you're at will change your perception. If you've spent your entire life saving for retirement, there are at a number of things to consider. On one hand, you'll think twice about exchange rates and the economy. But on the other hand, you want to live life to its fullest. After all, you only live once!

Even if you have plenty of savings and money to burn, the economy and pricing of commodities will always affect your decisions. Even if you aren't aware of it.
