Glamorous camping, or glamping, is it the new haute travel medium?

Glamping has been the butt of jokes by the Colbert Report, and heralded in the media as 'the next big thing in travel'. Are travelers looking for something new and different? Is standard hotel travel coming to an end for travelers with the big wallets? If going on vacation, are travelers seeking wilderness destinations over city destinations?

It all started with African Safari's but has sprung up in Canada as Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. An Ultra-Luxe all-inclusive tented experience for a small number of guests without a budget.

Have a read about these glamping experiences at wildretreatblog.com. There is also a Flickr Glamping page to showcase Glamping around the world.

So, is Glamping the next big thing? Is it going to last, or are you going to have to book years in advance to go camping at one of these resorts?

I must admit, it will take more than enclosed showers to get me Glamping. I love (adore) the name and the implication. But when I go on holiday I still want climate control, a swimming pool and dining options that don't include an open fire pit. No matter how fabulous that pit might be.

Having said that, I love that this option exists. If I were a camper, this would certainly be the way I chose to do so.

Personally, I think the word "glamping" is kind of a mistake. Some people absolutely hate the idea of camping on a luxury holiday, and that name evokes the idea of roughing it.

And I think based on frankidurbin's comments, the name actually gives false impressions. Some of these glamping tents actually have climate control in them. And I've seen these properties have pools as well. It's the idea of camping in a glamorous manner that turns some people off. You still think that because there's no latch on the door, the bugs are going to come in. But as we all know, the bugs come in even when there is a latch on the door!

four seasons tented camp in northern thailand is an amazing destination. great meals, lots of time with the elephants, and still very much a four seasons experience. The "tent" was bigger than my first apartment in NY, with climate control (which we turned off). No TV or radio though.
