My wife and I are usually not the type of people who like to travel back to a place we've been before. After years of always traveling to new destinations and almost never repeating a trip, we've been thinking of returning to some of the places where we've had fond memories. I'm curious if anyone else has found themselves in a similar situation or regularly returns to the places they love most.

Do you prefer to repeat your vacations? Or always travel somewhere new?

  2.

We try to take two long international vacations a year - one to one of our "favorite places" that we've been to many times before, and one to a new destination. (However, since we have acquired so many "favorites" over the years, lately, we've been doing more of the former and less of the latter.)

  3.

No. We try not to repeat sites, despite serious temptation in the past.

The world is just too big! There are too many cool new places and hidden jewels, just waiting to be discovered!

  4.

we do repeat often, but try to get someplace new at least every other trip. we really only take one big trip a year, but we try to make it fabulous! hence, we always have such a great time, that we want to return. but sometimes we just enjoy the comfort of knowing what to expect, rather than the great adventure. that is when we forgo europe and return to the four seasons hualalai.pure tropical luxury....

  5.

We try to take one trip that spans a few locations (Rome, the Amalfi Coast, the Cote d'Azur) and then another trip later that year (or early the next) where we can linger for a long time in one of those locations (such as Rome or Sorrento). I agree with an earlier commenter, that the world is too large to repeat locations. But destinations such as Rome are begging for 10-day stays rather than short expeditions (as we'd be restricted to with out initial agenda).

The temptation is great to return, but we'll explore other continents next.

  6.

Yes, we certainly do repeat some of our vacations. In addition to always seeking out new destinations, if we find places that we love, of course, we want to return, sometimes over and over again. In particular, for the tenth successive year now, we will be spending about three weeks in Italy, beginning October 1st. Donna Elena and I always try to couple our trips to Italy with visits to some new locations. But, once again, we'll also be spending a good deal of time in Rome and in Florence, staying, respectively, at the St. Regis Grand in Rome:

and at the Hotel Regency in Florence:

I dont' repeat them but they overlap. I doubt I'll go to Macchu Picchu again or Carnivale in Rio, but I go to Paris, Rome and Buenos Aires for repeated trips but of course do new things. Once I went to BA and then headed to Igazu Falls and Rio. Last time, I went to BA then headed south in Argentina to Puerto Madryn and south toward the Glaciers. Once I went to the Cote d'Azur and headed toward Barcelona, drove up toward Andorra and over to Provence and then back to Nice. The next time I went to the Cote and then went the opposite way to Italy.

I agree with Nanoose - although I return to many destinations I usually explore something new each time. For years I would return to Aix en Provence two or three times per year and fell in love with provence and the town of Aix so much I ended up buying a flat there, that I have had for six years. Now, I return to Aix nearly once every month or two and still have not seen everything in the area. I have also found that having a home there has made it easier to explore other destinations that are not as accessible from the states for quick - weekend type visits like Israel, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Maldives, Seychelles, etc. As far as other destinations go I like to visit new places of course but after a while it is only certain that you'll be returning to previous locations.

As much as I'm tempted to go back to favorite places, I usually try to seek out new destinations. I love travelling and I'm always curious to discover different areas, so I always see a vacation as an opportunity to experience something new. However, I don't see anything wrong with going back somewhere if you absolutely loved it... if that is what makes you happy and you will enjoy yourself, that is all that really matters!

thanks to European budget airlines it's so easy & cheap to keep popping back to my favourite cities - Barcelona, London, Vienna... just for a weekend trip to visit friends, irresistible! There are always new restaurants, exhibitions on and they're all so different in different months. I dont think I would repeat an amazing backpacking trip though, for that the world is definitely too big!!

Returning to your favorite vacation spots every year or every few years is wonderful. But equally enjoyable and interesting is traveling back to one of the places that you haven't been to in twenty years or so, seeing how much it has changed and enjoying it again.

If you've traveled extensively over a period of many years, this becomes a real problem. On one hand, there are so many places that you've been to that you really liked and that you want to go back to. On the other hand, there are still quite a few destinations that you haven't seen and that you want to visit while you still can. And you can only spend a certain amount of time traveling each year.

My experience is that this "problem" doesn't get any better as time goes on. It gets worse, especially as you find more and more places in the world that you like. But, as they say, it's not a bad problem to have.

Well said, Sohcahtoa! I thoroughly agree with your assessment of the quandary many of us find ourselves in when trying to decide where to go to on our next vacation.

  14.

As Nanoose and c.phipps said they had done, we are now starting to travel back to our favorite destinations around the world, staying at those places for extended periods of time and, while we're there, taking trips to nearby locations that we've never visited before. So, in one trip, you can return to your old favorite haunts and, at the same time, have the opportunity to explore new venues.

  15.

There are some vacations/trips I repeat (admittedly to some cool places), but those have usually been to visit family.

When it comes to actual repetition of visiting a certain city, I don't think there is anything wrong with going back. In fact, if anything, it shows how much you grew to appreciate the place, culture and people the last times you were there.

On the flip side though, I don't think you should try to re-create your past memories or re-live some vacation you've idealized over the years. For example, I did the "pick up and go on a whim to Europe with a bag, a map and your best friend" trip two summers ago. It was an amazing experience that I'd love to re-create. But that's what's so great about those memories then isn't it? They only happen once;) Enjoy the day and discover new memories, places and cities!

  16.

While I'm all for discovering new places I certainly do repeat some of my vacations if I really like the place...maybe not every year but I think there's always something different to discover or some places to re-visit you really enjoyed the last time you were there...
My personal "example": visiting Phoenix several times. I've made friends there and consider moving there once I receive my Green Card...just like the city, so why not travel there every once in a while?

We have been averaging two extended vacations a year lately. We try to arrange one of these vacations at a destination that we haven't been to before and, as for the other, we like to go back to somewhere we've been to a number of times. In the latter case, we always try to return to a hotel that we liked, where we know the staff, and we always like to go back to our favorite restaurants. So, in our travels, we're always trying to balance the old with the new.
