Who has stayed at one and what was your experience? I want to plan a luxury trip to Mexico and want to hear about which ones are truly the best.

Depending on if you are going to Mexico City or rural Mexico there are some amazing hotels that can be found. In Mexico City I haven't found an "amazing"hotel yet although there is a Four Seasons and the W Hotel which is nice and new. I was recently at the new Mandarin Oriental in Playa del Carmen which was really outstanding. I was shocked at the design and how cold the architecture felt but it was nice, clean, sleek and unexpected. The small suite I booked was really perfect, it had a great outdoor soaking tub and shower, stone walls, and the best part was a rooftop terrace. At night the attendant put what had to be forty or fifty white column candles outside and lit them and it really was relaxing. There are some really great little hotels that feel a bit more "mexican" too, like the Hacienda de las Santos. Also the Luxury Collection "which isn't always luxurious" offers a couple smaller traditional hotels that are fun, really unique, historic and nicely priced. They are the Hacienda San Jose, Hacienda Uayamon and the Hacienda Puerte Campeche. Out of the three I have found the Hacienda Uayamon to be the most interesting. The swimming pool is unique and fun, and you can really get lost on the property, wondering through the old structures and around the gardens. I have also been to the Four Seasons Punta Mita several times and have never been "blown away" by the resort. In a place like Mexico traditional is always more adventurous.

I was looking at the Punta Mita, and judging from the website it looks really nice, but I'm glad I got the insider tip from you. I think you may be right about veering towards a traditional or unique hotel. Thanks for the suggestions.

These are the 4 best hotels on the East Coast in my opinion - The Tides, Mandarin Oriental, Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita and the Hacienda San Jose. Reviews, video, photos, attractions and map available here: http://www.rivieramaya-luxury.com

When I was travelling in Puebla I stayed at 'Meson Sacristia de la Compania' which is a small unique boutique hotel. I found it to be super original- I think there are only 9 rooms or something like that and they are really small, but the decoration is very interesting. It's also really neat because all the furniture in the rooms is also for sale. The hotel's restaurant is also pretty amazing.
