My fiance and I are just starting to plan our honeymoon, and need some advice:
We want to stay at a nice hotel, on a beach, where there is ALSO stuff to do outside of the resort. We DON'T want to go to Hawaii, and we want to go somewhere the dollar is strong. But we're fine paying $500 per night or so.
Belize and Thailand are ideas we like. Bora Bora and Fiji seem beautiful, but we're worried we'll get bored. Jamaica or Costa Rica are too low-rent for us.
Any thoughts or good advice on other places we should consider?
My wife & I went to French Polynesia for our honeymoon, and we found that Bora Bora was NOT boring at all!
Hotel Bora Bora provided lots of excursions (jeep safari inland), reef snorkeling, deep sea fishing, jet-skis, pearl shopping, you can even rent out your very own mini-deserted picture-perfect island! Literally... just you & your spouse will be dropped off on this beautiful island with a picnic basket for a day (or half-day)- the island has a pre-built hut with amenities, but no one actually inhabits the island. What you & your spouse will do on an otherwise deserted island for half a day is up to you!
But the price tag was above $500, as I recall..
You might also want to try the Riviera Maya, just south of Cancun. We had a good time at The Tides. You can go spelunking in cenotes, scuba diving in Cozumel, it was lots of fun...
Cabo or even Acapulco have a lot of beautiful high-end luxury hotels to choose from. Plus if you're worried about being bored, luxury Cabo hotels typically have tons of activities to choose from - whale watching, snorkeling, horseback riding, ATV, eco tours, parasailing and other water sports, etc. I'm sure you could find a whole laundry list of activities at any resort.
Have you considered combining beach time with adventure time? So you have the best of both worlds. For instance, you could combine a few days sunning it up on a beach at a hotel in Fiji, even one of the private islands, like Wadigi Island - with a 5-day cruise on an adventure yacht like Tuitai - seeing tribes, waterfalls, scuba diving etc. There are some cool packages on: www.wactravel.com - Also look at www.tuitai.com
Brazil is another great choice for beach, jungle and culture - our honeymoon was in Trancoso - a funky beach village, but we also went to the Amazon and Rio. You need to stay away from tourist meccas like Recife and Fortaleza and you will find some very high-rent (but worth it) villas and hotels.
I went on my honeymoon to South Africa - I combined Cape Town (for the beach) with a safari in the Kruger National Park. It was the perfect relaxing/adventure mix. The sea is very very cold in Cape Town though so don't expect to swim!!
Great beaches. Your dollar will go a long way. And there are lots of great resorts that are also near activities. I'd suggest places around Krabi but there are lots of other great beach areas too. (For things to do, stay away from the small islands like Koh Tao).
I second TravelRose on Acapulco. I’ve been an Acapulco regular for about a dozen years now and I think it’s an overlooked destination these days. It’s a great place with truly everything to offer. Tons of fabulous beaches and places to stay (I'm a regular at Casa Delfin - www.acapulco-villa-rentals.com if you'r interested). I think you'd be very pleased with an Acapulco honeymoon. Congratulations BTW!
