We're currently on vacation in Rome and having a wonderful time. We're staying at the St. Regis Grand Hotel, which is, indeed, in my opinion, one of the most well-run, luxurious hotels in the world. A few years ago, The St. Regis chain (part of Starwood) took the fabled old Grand Hotel of Rome and poured hundreds of millions of dollars into restoring it to its 19th century grandeur. (The project was the subject of an extensive article in Architectural Digest at that time.) Under the skillful and dedicated direction of the hotel's Managing Director, Michele Frignani, the hotel's staff has been providing us daily with friendly, efficient service that rivals, if not exceeds, the service that we have received in any of the other fine hotels that we have stayed in around the world over the years. Located in a very convenient central location, the hotel is constantly kept in wonderful condition, complete with antique furniture and rooms that combine the charm of years gone by with all the modern electronic conveniences that one would expect from a hotel associated with the St. Regis organization. The hotel's small, but very luxurious and beautifully-decorated, restaurant, Vivendo, has been ranked number 1 in food in Rome for 2007 by Zagat. In summary, forget the Hassler or any other hotel you may have stayed in, in the past. I would strongly suggest staying at the St. Regis Grand the next time you're planning to be in Rome!

Sounds amazing! Almost suspiciously like an advertisement ;)

Surely there must be something that could be improved. Anything, in your opinion, at the hotel that needs some work or things to watch out for? After all, nothing is ever perfect.

What about the rooms? Do some have better views than others? Does the hotel's restaurant have any drawbacks? How is the location? etc. etc.

It would be very helpful to know some of the negative things about the hotel before any of us ever decide to stay there.

No. My post wasn't an advertisement. :( We have no connection with the hotel and we don't own any stock in the parent company that owns the St. Regis Hotel chain, Starwood! My wife and I talked it over and, between the two of us, we could not come up with ANYTHING that was negative about the St. Regis Grand in Rome. One should bear in mind that this is a genuine five star hotel, backed by the resources of one of the largest hotel organizations in the world. We've stayed at the St. Regis Hotel in New York and also found that to be a wonderful experience. When you check into a five star hotel, you expect that your experience will be perfect, or at least near-perfect. Every once in a while, you do achieve perfection and, indeed, we found this to be the case at The St. Regis Grand in Rome!

Earlier this week, we visited the new museum in Rome "Ara Pacis", by the river Tiber. The centerpiece of this new, modern museum, designed by the world-renowned architect Richard Meir, is the Ara Pacis, an altar dating back to the time of Augustus. The contrast between the ancient and the modern is both fascinating and beautiful. In addition to being able to view the Ara Pacis itself (which is breathtaking) the museum continually rotates other exhibits. This month, the exhibit covers 45 years of style by the designer Valentino. The ladies, of course, will love this, as did my wife. But, for men as well as women, the combination of the bright colors of Valentino's designs and the historical significance and beauty of the Ara Pacis is not to be missed if you're in Rome!

I have stayed at the St Regis, and it's as Don Pablo describes, but for my taste, somewhat dark and inward-looking; I prefer somewhere with a view. I go at every opportunity to the Terrace at the Hotel Eden - particularly for breakfast or, even better, for a coupe at sunset. The view over the city to St Peter's is absolutely breathtaking. Sit at Frederico Fellini's favourite table in the corner and have coffee or champagne depending on the time of day and be amazed.

Another Rome treat - Palazzo Colonna. I went to a party there and I'm not sure how you'd get in otherwise; but hotel concierges are amazing!
