Following up on tipping for luxury hotels, I would be interested in learning whether and how people tip on private jets and chartered yachts.
Apparently tipping pilots on private jets is considered offensive. Do you agree?
Also, tipping your skipper and crew is customary once you charter a yacht, but how about when you are someone's guest?

In my opinion, this has more to do with general etiquette than anything else. You should really never tip someone else's crew, pilot or skipper if you are the guest that has been invited along. If you're not paying your way, then it's not your responsiblity to tip anyone. And it could be considered rude to whomever invited you to come along. It implies that they can't tip their own staff.

You wouldn't tip your pilot unless they did something extaordinary to make your trip more enjoyable. But, that's not really a pilot's job. Their job is to safely deliver you to your destination.

I'm sure people have tipped their pilots a few hundred bucks here and there. And, I'm sure they didn't complain. I just think that they aren't expecting it.

I have to disagree with Vanessa. Tipping anyone who is doing you a service
is never offensive. I agree that if you are a guest on someone else's jet or
yacht, you shouldn't tip. If one of the crew does you a singular service or
favor, isolated from the general duties, a tip would not be out of line.

I use small private jets on occasion and a tip is appreciated. One is so used
to tipping that it's almost a natural reaction to any service. Anything given
with real sincerity and appreciation is fine.

I agree with Cat Jagger-Pollon that "Anything given with real sincerity and appreciation is fine." And if you offer, the person you're attempting to tip always has the option to gracefully decline, and no harm is done.

One final thought - while it would probably not be appropriate to tip the pilots, offering a gratuity to a (lower-paid) member of the crew, such as a flight attendant, might be a nice thing to do.
