Hi everybody!
I was thinking about developing a Luxury Boutique Hotel in tropical beach in Peru. As you know, Peru is a worldwide known destination for its culture, gastronomy and ecology so we would be focusing on travelers in need of relaxation and rest, once they went wherever they wanted. The Hotel would be located close to Cabo Blanco, where Hemingway spent 32 days fishing marlins in 1956. I would like to know what you think about the idea, share your opinions and give me some advices.
This Hotel would be exclusive and small, maximum 12 "villas". These villas will be far from each other and inside you could find a Kitchen area, Dining Room, Spa, a spacious bedroom and bathroom. The idea of a kitchen area and dining room comes from the possibility to make the reservation with a Personal Chef Service. This means a chef would come and cook guests whatever they want, in their own villa. If you are dining with your friends or family, the dining room would be a good place to seat, chat and enjoy the food. Besides that, we would still have a small international restaurant for those who don't want that service. We would also offer the possibility to go out on a sailing boat and, if the guests want, try to fish Hemigways’ epic Marlin.
The decoration would be eclectic: contemporary, feng-shui, romantic, since we will be focusing on couples from all ages wanting to run away from the stress of their jobs or wanting to rest after going to Machu Picchu, the jungle, or wherever they are coming from.
Joining the Small Luxury Hotels of the World is also one of our goals, in order to ensure high quality to our guests. Becoming a Green Hotel is one of our main goals as well.
What do you think about the concept? If you are interested in helping me develop this project, please ansnwer this survey.
I appreciate any type of advices and ideas that would help me complement my project, in order to offer a valuable experience.
Thank you for your time and assistance!
Alejandro A.

I think by the time Hemingway got to Cabo Blanco, the Old Man and the Sea was already written. He went there to film the movie based on his novel. So if you want to add some kind of celebrity into your hotel, you just have to be factual in your marketing materials.

Thank you for the correction, it was around 3 years later. But still, how do you like the idea?

Sure I like the idea of a lovely hotel on the beach. What is not to like? Would I take a beach vacation there? Probably not, as it is a bit far for me to go just for the beach--I have luxury hotels such as this much closer to home. But for people in that general hemisphere, it sounds nice.

I'm mostly aiming people coming for Machu Picchu, since Cultural Tourism represents 90% of tourism here, unlike Beach and Sun Tourism, which is around 20%.
Machu Picchu is high in the mountains; we are talking about 11000 feet or 3500 m. It is exhausting just to be there, but the experience is unbelievable.
I'm trying to get those tourists before they leave the country. Selling the hotel as a destination itself is not a good idea when aiming EEUU or European Markets. European tourists tend to have a longer overall stay in Peru, which means they have more time “available”. But yeah, the question is not "would you come to this hotel?" but "if you ever plan a trip to Peru, would you stay?"
So what services do you think are mandatory for a luxury hotel on the beach?
Thank you for your posts!

I went to Machu Pichu and did end up at a Beach town in Chile. (Iqueque). So I do think your idea has merit. Keeping all the dollars in Peru is a good goal. I don't know exactly how far your resort is from MP but tying into a huge attraction is smart. There are two threads on this sight called "Hotel Pet Peeves" and another called "Perfect Hotel Room" that might offer you insight to what people like/dislike in a hotel.

I think it is a wonderful idea. Tourism in Peru is growing rapidly and to offer a unique, very secluded and upscale resort in such a place would probably do well. If you are able to tie into such options such as Orient Express or possibly even having cruise lines like Silversea, Regent or Seadream offer your accommodations as part of the cruise package you would have a built in client base already.
I have been to MP three times and each visit I spend more time. If there were an upscale beach hotel nearby I would be excited to add that to my visit.
I do agree that having a kitchen would be an interesting concept. I have found it much more common to have a kitchen in a hotel room especially in higher end new hotels. The hotel Viceroy in Miami, as well as the Four Seasons Costa Rica and others have included a small efficiency kitchen into the hotel room.
Best of luck and hope I can visit sometime soon!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm seeing that opportunity, but right now getting the survey done is really difficult, since it has a lot of filters.
And the best beaches in Peru are north of the country, like 45 min flights from Lima and 30 min drive. These beaches have warm water and sun all year long. The beaches south of Peru are really cold and do not have sun all year. It is not that close to MP, but it would be worth it.
What do you think about that?

Frankly speaking, I don't think your idea is a good one. In fact, it might be a terrible idea in these times and financially very bad for you. With the worldwide economy severely depressed, people are not traveling very much, even to the more popular places. And those popular places are offering very attractive discount packages to try to bring some business in. I can't imagine your idea attracting enough business to be successful under these conditions.

Thanks for your post. Indeed the Tourism here has gone down a little, and it will probably continue going down. Being optimistic, the world economy will recover, sooner or later.
Traveling still happens, prices shouldn't be that high tho. Or, are you suggesting people will suddenly stop traveling?
I'm positive that being the last destination of a Tourist Package would be our best option, rather than selling ourselves as a Destination itself, because people would not know how much the hotel really costs, making them less sensitive. A good deal with Exclusive Travel Agencies is probably a good choice.
If you travel to Peru through a Travel Agency, would you choose a package that includes 2 days of relax before traveling back over one that doesn't... for a small difference in prices?

I am not suggesting people will suddenly stop traveling. What I am saying is that it is my opinion that this is NOT a good time to open the type of establishment you described.
When you began this discussion, you asked Extravigator's readers "What do you think about the concept?" As you requested, I'm giving you my answer. I don't think it is a very good concept. I, myself, would certainly not invest in such a venture and I would urge you not to pursue it. But, that's just my opinion.
Thanks from: Alejandro
