Donna Elena and I have been to Rome many times in the past. We have friends there and are never at a loss for things to do. However, except for visiting the Villa d'Este in Tivoli, with its fountains and gardens, and the Villa Adriana, we have never spent much time outside of the city.

We're planning to be in Rome for about two weeks this coming October and, feeling a bit adventurous, we are thinking about taking some day trips outside of the city, either by train or private car. In this regard, do any of you have any suggestions for possible destinations and things to do?

Hi DP: We had a fun little jaunt about an hour or two or so outside of Rome: Civita di Bagnoregio--it's a very cool little ancient city where you take a long footbridge to get there. It's just gorgeous--sort of like Macchu Pichu--nothing really to do there but enjoy the amazing scenery. We actually sat out on a balcony and had a wonderful lunch and then walked through the town and bought some olive oil and a few other things. But if you are looking for a great day road trip through the italian countryside, I would recommend Civita di Bagnoregio (google it to see photos and directions, etc).

Hello Nanoose! It was good to hear from you again. (I fondly remember our discussion on this site about "France's Finest Restaurants": http://extravigator.com/discussion/224/frances-finest-restaurants/ .)

Thanks very much for your suggestion about Civita di Bagnoregio. It seems to be just what I was looking for. I'll research taking a trip out there and, based on what you said, I think that the probability is quite high that we'll do it. In the meanwhile, if you think of anything else, please let me know....

    Thanks again!

P.S. - I hope you were able to make it to France last fall.

DP: As far as thinking of anything else, the "usual suspects" such as very worthwhile Pompei and Capri come to mind. But Civita is just a bit off the tourist beaten path....no, I did not go to France last fall as I decided to head down to Argentina instead. Went whale watching and glacier hopping....but looking at the Cote D'Azur in August---but the crowds may scare me off....enjoy Civita and let me know how you enjoyed your road trip! :)

Just to provide a "status report," one of the other destinations we are considering for a day trip outside of Rome is Celano:

We have some friends who live there and it's close enough to allow for a nice, leisurely visit and still have plenty of time to spend the evening in Rome.

Nanoose - we returned from Italy two days ago and I thought I'd tell you how we did with respect to taking day trips out of Rome.

Our schedule in Rome turned out to be busier than I had originally anticipated, and we only had one day available for a day trip. On that day, we took the train to Orvieto and we found Orvieto to be so beautiful, interesting and charming that we stayed there all day and never got to continue on to Civita di Bagnoregio, which was just a few miles further. We took the funicular, explored Orvieto, with its beautiful Duomo, and dined at Tipica Trattoria Etrusca, where we had a delicious lunch, which included a local pasta with a more-than-generous amount of white truffles that was simply fantastic.

We're planning to return to Rome once again next October and, when we do, we'll try to make it beyond Orvieto and on to Civita di Bagnoregio. Even though we didn't get there this year, I thank you for the recommendation. Were it not for that recommendation, we wouldn't have wound up in Orvieto!

DP: My work is done here. :) Well, now I am going to have to get to Orvieto...sounds spectacular. What a wonderful day you had. And, of course, in regard to the world in general, and Italy in particular, no matter where you go, you are always missing out on something else wonderful. I'll try to get to Orvieto--you try for Civita and one day, we'll compare notes. Meanwhile, I think we are headed down to Panama. I hear there is great canal there, warm weather year round, fabulous beaches and $ in widespread circulation.

Just to whet some travelers' appetites, here is a photo of the beautiful duomo at Orvieto and a view of the surrounding countryside from the town wall:

Here is the address, telephone number and website associated with Tipica Trattoria Etrusca in Orvieto, where we had that wonderful homemade pasta dish with the white truffles:

    Tipica Trattoria Etrusca
    Via L. Maitani, 10 - 05018
    Orvieto, Italy

    Tel.: 0763.344016

    http://www.argoweb.it/trattoria_etrusca/

It's only about 50 meters away from the duomo.

Orvieto is in the midst of one of the most prolific truffle-growing areas in Italy.
