I love travel, speak spanish and live in Buenos Aires. It should come as no surprise that I try to get out and travel whenever I can. Some of my personal favorite places I have visited are:
Mancora, Peru
MontaƱita, Ecuador
El Bolson, Argentina
El Calafate, Argentina
Florianopolis, Brazil
These places are all smaller villages/towns but that are very welcoming to Travellers willing to find them. I have gone back to visit a few more than once.
I wanted to ask the forum what some of your favorite smaller towns are - ones that I may have to add to my destination list...

Alazulf - I'm sorry, but I'll predict that you will get very few (if any) responses to your request for additional small town destinations in Latin America. Having posted on Extravigator.com for a few years now, I don't believe that there are many readers here who travel to South America often, much less travel to small towns in South America.
I would suggest that - if you have the time - instead, you let us know a little about the various small towns/villages that you listed and why it would be worthwhile to visit them.
What I am saying here is not intended to discourage other readers from trying to respond to your request but, as I said, I don't think there will be many responses.

I love Bariloche, Argentina. Charming. I preferred it to El Calafate. Also, I really loved Iquiqui, Chile, it's north, near Peru. And while it isnt a small town, I'm a fan of La Paz, Bolivia.

It is really a shame that on a site of established affluent members, you - The Rover - would say that no one travels to South America often. It is a gorgeous continent with so much to offer, and for the snobs reading this, yes there is a lot of luxury to be had in South America, and yes luxury in these small towns.
Rover- have a little faith.

Alazulf - I apologize if I offended you. But, I didn't say that no one travels to South America often. What I did say was that "...I don't believe that there are many readers here who travel to South America often, much less travel to small towns in South America." When I said that, I was talking, based on my experience of following this website for quite some time, only about people who post on Extravigator.com, not about people in general. You can look at the various comments that have been posted here on this website over the past few years and you will see a dearth of inputs having to do with South America. But, that is also true of places like Australia and some other areas in Southeast Asia.
But, as I also said, I was not intending "...to discourage other readers from trying to respond to your request." So, let's see if any other readers respond. I hope they do. (I do note that you've already received one response, from Nanoose, and I'm happy to see that.)
Finally, I reiterate my suggestion that - again, if you have the time - you provide us some information about the various small towns/villages that you listed and why it would be worthwhile to visit them. That might encourage readers here to take an interest in traveling to South America more often.

Alazulf, it's not nice to do a shout out calling people names (snobs)...it's a big world and some people don't go to South America for many reasons--not just because they don't feel it's luxurious or beneath them. Everybody isn't interested in everything--some people may not like the latin culture for instance and they don't go to Spain either. Its okay. And I understand that people don't go to South America--and I for one, love that! While everyone is jetting off to Paris to pay thousands of dollars for the louvre and haute cuisine, I jet to the Paris of South America and can't believe my luck to get out of the winter snow and walk the sprintime lavender infused boulevards at 10 cents on the dollar. And the food, mon dieu. The boutique hotels with 1,000 count sheets for $100? Don't post anymore on South America--let's keep it our secret...And Rover, I really hate when people critique other people's post. If you don't like a post, move on and contribute to a post you do like. This is a website-- not a school on how to post to get the most responses.

Nanoose, pray tell, when you jet to the Paris of South America, what city are you going to? Is it Buenos Aires?

Why "pray tell" what is that about? Why not "Are you referring to BA?" Yes, of course BA. I didn't invent the nickname of "Paris of South America"--it's commonly referred to as that. And well deserved to--it's a wonderful wonderful city and Argentina is a wonderful country. So lovely, so diverse. In fact, google: Paris of South America and "Where to Live in Buenos Aires" will pop up.

I agree. Not sure how that warrants a "pray tell." Since when did this become Snobigator all of the sudden? Even readers of USA Today know that BA is the Paris of South America (see the first destination on their list of top affordable places):

O.K., O.K. As you can see from my post, I was pretty sure it was Buenos Aires and I was just checking to make sure. Sorry about that.

wow- never thought my posting would spark such controversy... loving it all. and loving the fact that now we have people talking about South America. A continent ripe for discovery and enjoyment... maybe i shouldn't elaborate on my favorite towns here, maybe I should just let the readers come down here and explore for themselves... (hint: do check out the ones I listed previously)

We loved Santiago. The people and the sites were a wonderful surprise.
Saying that, the most amazing thing we've ever seen was Iguazu Falls in
Argentina & Brazil.
