Great Golf Vacations
  • Can anybody give me some suggestions for some great golf vacations, with luxury accomodations - preferably in the USA - that may not be as well known as some of the top golf resorts?
  • You asked for some suggestions for golf resorts that have luxury accommodations but are not that well known. One such place that comes to mind is The Balsams Grand Resort, a grand hotel that has been recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America's treasured historic hotels.

The hotel has been in existence since 1866 and is frequently referred to as "the Switzerland of America." The golfing is wonderful at the Balsams and guests come from all over the world to play in a place that's far removed from the outside world. But, although that's part of the lure, it's also not the easiest place in the world to get to, being located in Dixville Notch, in Northern New Hampshire. However, going there is like being transported back in time to another century. The food is very good, on a gourmet level, and the golfing experience is extraordinary!
  • During the past few weeks there have been a number of comments posted on this website that talk about the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. What they didn't mention was that the Greenbrier resort is considered by many to be one of the top golf destinations in the USA. It's got four great championship courses and a PGA event was recently held there. It's a bit out of the way but well worth going to if you really want to test your golf game.
  • There's a great place just about a half hour outside of Houston Texas called the Woodlands Resort. http://www.woodlandsresort.com/ It has great sprawling grounds with beautiful gardens, swimming pools, wonderful rooms and great restaurants. You have your choice of two championship golf courses. The Panther Trail golf course is more difficult than the Oaks golf course. But both are a joy to play on. Being so close to Houston makes it relatively easy to get to from any place in the USA.
  • There are some really great golf courses in Bermuda and, of course, some wonderful luxury hotels there. In the off-season, when the beach crowd has disappeared, it's quiet and not crowded and there are some very good values to be had there, not only on accommodations but also on airfare.
  • I found an excellent blog post with a list of top 10 luxury golf resorts in the U.S. My personal favorites on the list are The Grand Del Mar and Terranea Resort.
