I visited Chantilly Chateau last time I was in Paris, and I can´t recommend it enough. It is a beautiful place and, unlike Versailles, you will find practically no tourists there.
We took the train at Gare du Nord, and arrived in Chantilly in 20 minutes. Then we took a taxi at the station that dropped us at the entrance of the Chateau in 5 minutes.

We strolled around the beautiful gardens first. Then we visited the Chateau, which hosts an impressive private collection of paintings.
We took the guided tour which, although it was in French, allowed us to visit the private apartments, which are closed to the public otherwise. All the Chateau is very impressive.

Then we headed to the nearby Living Museum of the Horse. This were the stables that prince Louis-Henri de Bourbon built, because he thought he was going to be reincarnated as a horse.

Here´s another picture, these are the stables that host the Museum. There are equestrian performances at this museum as well.

I lived in Paris for about six months last spring, and Sandy is right, Chantilly is absolutely amazing. The town is cute, but the Chateau is beautiful. (You do have to book a guided tour to see the inside, but it's even impressive from the outside.) My boyfriend and I stayed at Dolce Chantilly, which was a little conference/golf for my taste, but nice nonetheless. It’s within walking distance to the Chateau. I had to fly to New York the next morning, and the taxi to Charles de Gualle was only about 20 minutes, which was impressive since you feel as if you're in the peaceful countryside at Chantilly.
If you're very interested in the castles and chateaux, I would recommend a trip to the Loire Valley to see them. A car is probably necessary to get between them, but they're all so worth it.

    Emily,

We took the guided tour inside the Chateau with no need to book it. As we were entering the main hall, we saw a small group gathering and heard that the tour was about to start, and we were invited to join in. The tour was free of charge. This tour was in French, so I´m not sure if you need to book in advance for a tour in English. But in any case, don´t miss it because it´s the only way to visit the private rooms.
