I'm going to be heading to LA on a vacation next month and I'm looking to make some reservations before I go. Does anyone have any first-hand recommendations? Looking for at least one place for a special occasion.

Spago (the one in Beverly Hills) is really great for a special occasion. I was there about a month ago and it was terrific -- much better than I had anticipated. I kind of was expecting it to be Wolfgang Puck over-hype, but it really came through.
My appetizer was memorable: Ravioli with mascarpone, chevril, mint, goat cheese served over hazelnul brown butter, and it was out of this world. The wiener schnitzel was similar to that which I've had while in Vienna (though not as awe-inspiring when compared to my appetizer. More nostalgic than anything else).
The wine list is impressive, but even if you're ordering by the glass, you won't be disappointed.
I will also say that the pastry chef's creations were spot on along with a nice selection dessert wines that can be found on the menu.
If it's your first time to LA it's also fun for the power scene.

Although it's off the beat and path, I highly recommend Sushi Sasabune

I'll second the recommendation of Spago--it's not the trendiest place and it's probably not the absolute best, but it's fairly reliable. Depending on what you're up for, the tasting menu there is very good and quite long (I think 9 courses plus many freebies along the way, including the most impressive array of amuse-bouches I've ever seen). If you can drink a lot, the wine pairing that goes along with the tasting menu is an absolute steal. Call ahead if you're interested in the tasting menu, though--it's not always on offer.
Other places of note:
- Sona (fun fact: offers several first growth Bordeaux by the glass)
- Campinelle (simple but good)I've heard good things about Jar and Cut, Wolfgang Puck's new steakhouse.

Head to Skewers on Santa Monica Blvd. Great place with, as names suggests all food from fish, lamb ,chicken, steak, pork and veg served on skewers and offered with lots of different marinades, so Fusion Food with Meditteranean twist. Small out and indoor restaurant, but you should book as popular place to be and close to some good bars etc should you want to hit the high notes after dinner. Great beers and good selection of wines and spirits.

Oh, gosh, my favorite EVER is [Osteria Angelini](http://www.angeliniosteria.com/). I actually go to LA sometimes only to have dinner there!!
You will get a taste of Romagna, the best food in Italy! The chefs are just great- Angelini himself mans the kitchen, and his staff is all Romagna trained (I know because one of the chefs in my parents' restaurants in Italy just went to work there!).
