any suggestions for a luxury hotel good for a family in santa monica. Is Shutters or Casa Del Mar worth the extra cost over Loews?

Yes, they are. But, I would also consider Le Merigot Beach Hotel, and the Fairmont Miramar over Loews.

IMHO Shutters has become complacent and is not worth the $$$s any more (sad, because it was one of our favourite places to stay) Though it's undoubtedly great to be right on the beach, the location of these hotels makes a stroll on 3rd St Promenade an awkward walk or short car drive away.
Since we decided to spend our Santa Monica $$s elsewhere, we've struggled to find a suitable bolthole - currently booking the non-family-friendly Huntley but have been interested in recent publicity for the refurbed Oceana and may give it a whirl next trip out there.
