    Kitzbuhel is a paradise for skiing, but is equally lovely as a base for hiking in the summer. And the best part of hiking is finding the beautiful mountain inns in which to have a drink, watch the sunset and take dinner. Late summer - August and September - brings you into the mushroom season when the inns feature delicious variations of eierschwammel (chanterelle) and steinplitzer. Better still, some of them will have a wonderful heidelbeeren (known locally as moosbeeren and in French as myrtille) pudding. Drink the delicious Grune Veltliner whites and Sweigelt reds that are now becoming rightly popular outside Austria.

    Hallewirt at Ober Aurach

    Gasthaus Chizzo and Hotel Reisch in the town
    Stanglwirt at Going
