I am always interested to hear where other people love to eat. The places that I prefer combine good cooking, a decent choice of wines, great ambience and excellent service. To make them particularly memorable, they should have a wonderful view or be close to something interesting.

    At the moment, mine are

The Bach,Taupo, North Island, New Zealand - a tiny place, great food, superb wines (try the astonishingly good Mt Difficulty) and stroll to the edge of Lake Taupo to watch the sunset between courses.
    Taupo

Misogui-gawa, Pontocho, Kyoto, Japan - one of the best French restaurants in Japan, on the Kamo River. Don't forget to buy the superb chocolates on the way out (not available in summer)
    Kyoto

The River Cafe, Hammersmith, London - one of the world's great Italian restaurants, close to the River Thames. The lighting is perfect - and so is the food.
    The River Cafe

Zuma, Knightsbridge, London - a fantastically good modern Japanese restaurant with a great buzz.
    Zuma

Wildfire, Circular Quay, Sydney - excellent wood-fired grills served on swords right beside the harbour with a view of the Opera House. Great for big parties.
    Early morning Sunday

Felix, The Peninsular, Hong Kong - in a city of great restaurants, this is for special evening occasions - for the restaurant's stunning Phillipe Starck design and amazing views across to Hong Kong Island.
    Hong Kong

Wirthaus Steuerberg, Schwartzsee, Kitzbuhel - lovely inn with a terrace overlooking the vast Wilder Kaiser. Great food and wine and a wonderful Tyrolean atmosphere.

    Now, let's have yours!

I could list hundred of my favorite restaurants, but here are 7 of my favorites that come to mind offhand.

    • Hassan in Tokyo, Japan. It's an oldie, but goodie. Excellent Shabu Shabu.
    • Prime One Twelve in Miami for steak. Mouth watering cuts of beef. The side dishes are amazing and the desserts alone are worth the trip.
    • The Shake Shack in Madison Square Park in New York for the one of the world's best burgers and shakes
    • Il Latini in Florence. Casual atmosphere. Fantastic food, but a lot of fun.
    • Babbo in New York.
    • Gary Danko in San Francisco
    • Le Cinq in Paris

So many..... but right now (the list changes, as do the rankings and order, depending on season and mood), the winners are:
    1) Arzak, San Sebastian – drama, intensity, passion and love on a plate (or nine)
    2) Los Espigones, near Mistral Beach, San Pedro (near Marbella), Spain – the best paella. Cheap, not fancy, full of locals. And a very poky sangria.
    3) Huong-Viet, Dalston, Hackney, London. The Vietnamese cultural centre serves up authentic, excellently priced dishes that I dream of when I'm away from London.
    4) PlumpJack Café, San Francisco – excellent seasonal produce, a wonderfully eclectic wine list, and super-knowledgeable, warm staff.
    5) Royal Naim, Sparkbrook, Birmingham – the best balti to be found in Birmingham. A real foodie experience.
    6) Le Chabichou, Courchevel 1850, France – two Michelin stars shining bright at the top of a mountain. Sumptuous, rich, technically brilliant food. The truffle and egg dish is one of the most beautiful things I've ever eaten.
    7) Then it's a toss up between: BLT Prime (kobe!!); Wagamama (cheap, consistently excellent food); Busaba EatThai (ditto); Hakkasan; and La Posata in Rioja (road-side caff with Michelin-star standard food).

Sorry about the last few squeezed into point 7. But it's hard to choose!

Ditto. Here are my seven of the moment.

    1 Per Se, New York
2 The Feast at Lei Lei, Maui. It's touristy, but the food was memorable.
    3 One.waterfront, Capetown, South Africa
    4 La Grenouille, New York
5 Picasso in Las Vegas. It was much better than I expected.
6 In-n-Out Burger in Los Angeles. That would be my last meal
7 Grimaldi's Pizza in Brooklyn New York. It really is worth the trip to Brooklyn.

Great list, Herry. Subject to change, but for now here's mine:

1 Rockpool Bar and Grill, Melbourne.
2 French Laundry, St Helena (cliche and not always consistent, but super great when it's on)
3 Etxebarri, somewhere between San Sebastian and Bilbao. Not fancy, but incredible.
4 Hakkasan, London (impossible not to love it!)
    5 Zuma, London
    6 Picasso, Las Vegas
    7 Guy Savoy, Paris

    Thanks from: Herry Lawford
