My vote for a truly great hotel goes to the Taj Mahal, Bombay (known officially as Mumbai).

It is a great hotel. And if you are already in a different hotel, I recommend to go there for breakfast or a coffee because they have a great view on the water.
And if you like this hotel you will love Amarvillas if you are visiting the Taj Mahal.

This is the hotel by the Gateway to India, isn't it? Thanks for the pics, been planning a trip to Bombay and I remember Michael Palin stayed there on one of his world jaunts. What were the rooms like, any recommendations for which one to ask for? Thanks.

Definitely ask for a room in the Old Wing, and for preference facing the sea. The best room for me is 502 (ie on the 5th / Club Floor with acess to the Club Lounge which also has a wonderful view of the Arabian Sea). Make sure you catch the sunrises and sunsets!

If you are really interested, I wrote a piece about it for Lloyd's List a year or so ago which you can read on my blog here http://tinyurl.com/2crxmm

Old wing is called the Palace. The newer (and frankly uninspiring)part is the Tower. The best bets in the Palace are the suites - which have details such as twin Victorian bathtubs. The standard rooms in the Palace are, unfortunately, a bit poky. The Mumbai hotel scene will pick up a bit when the Four Seasons opens in Worli (if it can overcome the somewhat blah location).

Thank-you for the tip, Herry Lawford. I also greatly enjoyed reading about the Taj on your blog. Pity about the new windows!

For what it's worth, when I stayed at the Taj back in the early 70's, a room in the old wing cost $12.50 a night.
