Next Summer I plan on vacationing at Lake Como for a few days. Does anyone have any advice about which hotels or villas are worth staying at? I was thinking about the Villa d'Este, but I've also heard good things about Hotel Villa Serbelloni. I'd also be willing to rent a villa, but I'm leaning towards a hotel.
Also, if anyone has any ideas for good day trips nearby, I'd be interested to hear about them.

A few years ago, my wife and I had an extended stay at the Villa d"Este, which is located on the outskirts of Como. We had heard very good things from some of our friends and mixed reviews from others. Well, we were extremely disappointed in the hotel. While we found the grounds to be beautiful, we felt that the service was fair at best. The staff was pretentious and haughty and, yet, in general, the service they provided was lacking in accuracy and timeliness. The dining experience, including the food, left a great deal to be desired. On the other hand, just last October, we stayed an entire week at the Hotel Villa Serbelloni, in Bellagio, at the northern end of Lake Como. It was fantastic - the rooms, the service, the restaurants and even the music during dinner outside the main dining hall! Also, in stark contrast to the Villa D'Este, where there are no local restaurants in close proximity to the hotel, when you walk out of the Villa Serbelloni, you're right in the heart of Bellagio, with many very good restaurants to choose from. And as for Bellagio - well if it's not heaven on earth, it's certainly in the same zip code!

My wife and I spent about a week at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. It was great. Not a stuffy formal hotel- the staff was great- very personable and helpful. The grounds are great too- they have 3 (by now maybe 4 pools if the indoor one was opened)- one is floating in the lake which is a really neat site (but the water is cold...). Like you, we heard about the serrbellioni (whose michelin starred restaurant was over-rated), and villa d'este but they were booked. This was our third option, but after our stay, wouldn't bother with the others. while the rooms may need a renovation, they were clean, decent sized with amazing views of the lake.
While you are there, go for dinner at a restaurant called la velu (i think that is how you spell it) great food and amazing views and atmosphere.

One of the other very nice things about staying at the northern end of Lake Como is that you can just jump on one of the ferries that frequently criss-cross the lake, and visit one of the many charming little lakeside towns that are literally minutes away. As I mentioned in a previous post, we stayed in Bellagio but, one day, we took a ferry over to Tremezzo, where I had the best spaghetti carbonara I ever had in my life at a little cafe there.

Thanks guys. Do you have any recommendations for day trips? It sounds like the ferries make things easy around the lake, but maybe you could let me know if anything stood out as being memorable or highly recommended nearby?

One thing my wife and I did that was a lot of fun was rent a motor boat for the day and drive around the lake. It is a great way of seeing the area and all of the really amazing houses on the shore and up in the hills.

Hi why not try Lugano? The lake is beautiful and only about 20 miles from lake Como. Lugano is way more sophisticated and it is a gorgeous little city. You should stay at the Villa Principe Leopoldo. A stunning small 5 star hotel just on a hill overlooking the city and the lake. Shopping is also excellent and you can find all the LV, Gucci, Prada, Armani boutiques in the same main street. The is also a place that rents out Riva motorboats.
